5 Milk Myths and the Truth Behind Them

‘Having a glass of milk every day will make us stronger and healthy’ – is our foremost learning of childhood. Isn’t it? Milk or cow milk is said to be a super-food for its enormous health benefits we already know. And is known as one of the best healthy drink from pre-historical times!

Till now, we consider milk as a calcium-rich-food and the regular consumption can keep at bay many unwanted illnesses. However, there are some other viewpoints of several vegan groups who question about the health benefits of cow milk. Similarly, there are some milk myths we will be discussing here.

Let’s bust these five popular milk myths, which are matters of continuous debate from years.

Myth 01: Organic Milk is Much Healthier than Regular Milk.

Buster: Organic milk is produced from cows which are not treated with antibiotics. Regular milk may contain residue from antibiotics, which is as per research is below the tolerance level. Apparently, both of them are the same and equally nutritious. What you should consider is that the quality of the milk depends on multiple factors and not only to the farming process (organic or conventional). There’s no evidence that any one type of milk is better than the other.

Myth 02: People with Lactose Intolerance Need to Avoid Milk and all dairy products.

Buster: The degree of lactose intolerance varies from people to people and this intolerance might decrease with the growing age. Moreover, many of them can enjoy milk and dairy products in a smaller amount. Lactic intolerant people do not require a completely lactose-free diet as milk and milk products provide key nutrients such as calcium, Vitamin A &D, riboflavin, and phosphorus.

Myth 03: Raw Milk is More Nutritious than Pasteurized Milk.

Buster: Pasteurized milk is the safest form of milk. Pasteurization reduces the bacterial load in the milk, which presents in raw milk. Raw milk exposes to various harmful forms of bacteria and can pose health hazards. Also, pasteurization has not been proven to change the nutrition of the milk in any significant way. The nutritional components in the milk stay roughly the same. The protein and fat in milk are not affected, and there is only a slight reduction of vitamins, mainly a negligible loss of vitamins A, C, B, and Folic Acid. Again the shelf life of raw milk is very low. Your risk increases exponentially with each passing day. Pasteurization reduces this risk, extends the life of milk, makes it fit well into our society of convenience.

Myth 04: If you buy packaged milk from the market, you'll have to boil it.

Buster: The best part about packaged milk is that the aseptic packaging of it involves transferring the treated milk into pre-sterilized packages in a sterile environment. Therefore, there is no risk of contamination and therefore there's no need to boil the milk before use. You can have it directly or warm it slightly to have it as a hot beverage.

Myth 05: Packaged milk has added preservatives.

Buster: Milk packaged in poly pouches are completely preservative free. The milk that is packaged is pasteurized and homogenized which ensures no organisms left in the milk. This is why these packs come with a shelf lives of 48 hours while refrigeration that too without the disadvantage of milk preservation.
